The January transfer window was hot, as anything. Just like the summer transfer window: amazing deals, world-class players moving, but only a difference: it was too short. However, some of the deals I wanted to see happen actually happened.
This is a list of the most major transfers of the January transfer.
- Phillipe Coutinho from Liverpool to Barcelona
The most intriguing and recurring transfer talk of the summer finally came to pass. Many see the La Liga giants losing in the deal because he is cup-tied and cannot play in the Champions League, but some also think Barcelona are still in a good position since they finally got their man, who can provide a great squad depth, due to the Brazilian’s ability to play in the midfield or join the star-studded attack of 5-time Ballon D’Or winner, Lionel Messi and Uruguayan Luis Suarez. He got his debut coming on as a substitue for Andres Iniesta in the Blaugrana win against city rivals Espanyol in the Copa del Rey quarter final second leg. He started his first game against Alaves, although he did not make so much impact since he was on the right wing, his less preferred position.
He moved for a reported 106 million pounds, but of course, everyone knows add-ons were included.
- Virgil van Dijk from Southampton to Liverpool
As Jurgen Klopp’s most wanted man before the move, the hype in the media prompted rumors of Manchester City, Manchester United and even Barcelona moving for the Dutch centre-back.
At the end, the Dutchman agreed to join Liverpool in a deal worth 75 million pounds, making him the most expensive defender in football history.
Honestly, there is inflation in the football transfer market!
